Shirking Responsibility

“The moment any man is sufficiently developed to assume a position in regard to the total consciousness of the universe (whether he regard it as a coordinated whole, or as merely so many scattered sparks), whether he knows it or not, whether he wants to confess it or not, he has a religion.

A religion is incomplete, and an organized religion decays when it excludes from its domain any specific area of thought or action.

The mystic or moralist who excludes economic right and wrong from his scheme of things, is a shirker.”

Biosphical Review, Winter, 1935
